The Basic Information
Household trash must be placed in a plastic or metal trash can with a lid and handles or in a securely tied trash bag. (Maximum can & bag size: 32 gallons and 40 pounds) Oversized “contractor” trash bags, large totes, small grocery bags, cardboard boxes, baskets and like containers should not be used for household trash.
Regular curbside customers are NOT permitted to use large “tote” style trash cans or “contractor” size trash bags that exceed 32 gallons. 55-Gallon drums and other similar non-authorized containers, some with homemade handles cut into the sides, pose a risk of hand and back injuries to refuse collectors. Therefore, drums and other miscellaneous containers that are not sold specifically for trash storage, could be disposed of as illegally placed trash and no refunds will be given.
The Refuse fee(s) is included on the sewer bill issued every month. For residential, the refuse charge is based on the number of dwelling units in the property and covers costs related to curbside collection of trash, recycling, yard waste and scheduled large items. Revenue generated from the refuse charge also helps to cover cost associated with street sweeping and snow removal throughout the City.
- For information or questions concerning your sewer and refuse invoice please call (717) 849-2268.
- One residential unit is currently charged $26.85 per month.
- One commercial unit is charged $53.70 per month.
- The minimum administrative fee for refuse is $8.25 per month.
- To find out what the curbside collection days are for your property, call 717-843-1240 (Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

Refuse Districts & Areas
In York City, there are two refuse districts. The first collection area is Monday/Thursday and the second area is Tuesday/Friday.
RECYCLING and YARD WASTE are collected MONDAYS in the Monday/Thursday area and TUESDAYS in the Tuesday/Friday area.
The City is generally divided in half along Market Street. The North half, including both sides of Market Street, is the Monday/Thursday refuse district; the South half is the Tuesday/Friday refuse district.
The order in which collection routes are run may vary at any time and customers are reminded that collections may be earlier or later than they are generally accustomed to.
Crews will not return for items that were not placed out on time.
To ensure collections, customers are reminded to place ALL items at the designated spot by 6 a.m. on their designated collection days. Items that are placed out late, after crews have already gone through, must be held until the next regularly scheduled collection day. Each property has only ONE designated collection point.
Collections begin as early as 6 a.m. and may continue as late as 9 p.m. Customers may call York City’s Public Works office at 843-1240 or at 849-2245 the following day to report a missed collection.
