The first March was held during the summer of 2001. It was organized in an attempt to promote diversity, equality, and non-violence in York County. It was also to be held in remembrance of Lillie Belle Allen and Officer Henry Schaad who were killed during the 1969 race riots. It was during that summer that the investigations for the 1969 race riots began. Also, a number of hate groups made public demonstrations. The idea for the March came about when the Task Force was trying to find a way to motivate people to stand up against hate in our community. The Task Force did not know how many people would show up to march on that summer day, and they were not even sure what to expect. They never expected that 350 youth and adults would attend the first ever Youth Unity March! When they realized what a huge success the March was, the Task Force decided that it was important to continue to make the community aware of the fact that Yorkers are not going to stand for hate and injustice. To date over four thousand have marched in support of diversity, equality, and non-violence. This message is not just for the day, but is translated everyday. Because of this, we want to make the 10^th Annual Unity March, July 15, 2010 the best ever.

The annual event starts at Penn Park and finishes at Farquar Park, Businesses, Civic Groups, Summer Camps, and School Clubs are encouraged to form a group and join this march.  For more information about the 2010 march or to support this worthwhile event contact the York City Human Relations Commission at 717-846.2926
