Goal
The goal of our Communicable Disease Program is to maintain active surveillance and reduce communicable diseases in the community.
Communicable diseases such as Hepatitis, Measles, West Nile Virus, and Salmonella, by virtue of their methods of transmission, become public health concerns. Poor hygiene, contaminated food or water, unprotected sex, intravenous drug use, insect exposure, and close contact with an infected individual are modes of transmission for some communicable diseases.
The Bureau of Health works closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to identify and investigate reports of reportable diseases and conditions. The Health Bureau is the local public health authority defined by the Pennsylvania State Communicable Disease law to receive and investigate all cases reports for the residents of York City. Community Health Nurses receive reports via the National Electronic Data Surveillance System (NEDSS) or by phone or fax from local health care providers and laboratories.
Community Health Nurses investigate the case to verify diagnosis, confirm treatment, determine the source of the illness, reinforce medical advice, provide contact notification as necessary, and provide education to prevent further spread of infection.
