SIGN UP YOUR KIDS FOR SAFETY TOWN
The Susan Byrnes Health Education Center is offering Safety Town for children ages 4 and 5 Sept. 15-19 from 9 a.m. to noon. Representatives from the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services and the York City Police Department will be teaching a class during Safety Town. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Scholarships for York City residents are available. Safety Town teaches children how to stay safe in a variety of daily environments and will include learning about stranger danger, playground and bicycle safety. SPLASH! SUMMER PROGRAM SERIES AT FOUNDRY PARK
The SPLASH! Summer Program Series at Foundry Park on the Codorus is underway and includes a Friday lunch time concert series which continues throughout July, August and September from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. SPLASH! also includes an evening concert series and events for children. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy live music in the park. All events are free and open to the public. Foundry Park is located in the 200 block of West Philadelphia Street. STREET SWEEPING RESUMES
Street Sweeping has resumed in the City of York. The City's Ticket and Tow initiative also continues this year. Vehicles will be ticketed and towed on posted streets. The fine for no parking is $15 and the charge for the tow is $120. Download a complete street sweeping and ticket and tow list for August.

SNAP PROGRAM OFFERS FREE SMOKE DETECTORS FOR CITY RESIDENTS
The York County Citizen's Corps Council, York County Chapter American Red Cross, York City Fire & Rescue Services, York City Police Department and York City Bureau of Health are partnering for the second year of a family-friendly community building initiative--a series of "SNAP" (Safe Neighborhood Awareness Program) events. The last SNAP event for 2008 will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21 from 4 p.m.to 7 p.m. at the AME Church lot at the corner of South and Queen streets.
Free smoke detectors for City residents will be handed out during the SNAP event. If you can't attend the event, please call the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services at 854-3921 and leave your name, address and phone number. Smoke Detectors with 10-year lithium batteries are now available for York City residents, free of charge, while supplies last. The smoke detectors will be installed by the York City Fire & Rescue Services in the homes of residents that pre-register. All residents must pre-register. To pre-register call 854-3921. The 2008 Smoke Detector program was made possible by the United Way of York County Special Response Fund.

The City of York, PA will celebrate Labor Day with festivities being held at Kiwanis Lake on Monday, September 1, 2008 from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with food, fun, music, carnival games, amusement rides and fireworks! The yard sale/flea market will begin at 6:00 a.m. The Fishing Derby will begin at 7:00 a.m. Mayor John S. Brenner will be the MC for the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
The Labor Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. Parade route is a follows: North Georget Street to Parkway Blvd. to Kiwanis Lake.

MILLING & PAVING SET TO BEGIN 08/19/2008

CITY OF YORK SCHEDULES STREET WORK Richland Avenue, Linden Avenue and Madison Avenue scheduled for Milling and Paving
Mayor John S. Brenner announced the following schedule. Richland Avenue, Linden Avenue and Madison Avenue between Carlisle Avenue and Market Street are scheduled for milling and paving work in the City of York.
Milling will begin on Wednesday, August 20 at 7:00 A.M. with partial lane closures. Streets will reopen to traffic each evening.
Paving work should begin on Monday, August 25 and will take place between 7:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Lane closures will be required during the paving project. All motorists are advised to obey posted No Parking signs for the duration of this work. The milling contractor for this project is Rota-Mill Inc. and the paving contractor is Kinsley Construction, Inc. C. S. Davidson is providing engineering and inspection services for the project. Questions about the project can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 849-2245.

CURBSIDE YARD WASTE COLLECTION 02/12/2008

BRUSH: Bundled branches, each branch must be less than 4” in diameter (maximum bundle size: 3’ x 3’ and 40 pounds); or use authorized yellow yard waste cans (maximum can weight: 40 pounds). LEAVES/PRUNINGS/GARDEN RESIDUE (NO GRASS CLIPPINGS): Use biodegradable kraft paper bags (maximum: 32 gallons; 40 pounds); or use authorized yellow yard waste cans (maximum: 40 pounds).
Customers are reminded that plastic bags should NOT be used and will not be collected for yard waste collections. Customers also should not place bag liners in their yard waste cans. Grass clippings should be placed in with regular trash and will count toward the normal trash bag limit. YARD WASTE SITE WILL OPEN TO YORK CITY CUSTOMERS ONLY.
The City’s Yard Waste Facility at Memorial Stadium will open on Saturday, April 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., weather permitting. Customers must provide proof of customer status or residency, such as a valid license or a recent sewer bill. This drop-off facility is accessible to York City customers only and should be used only during the hours of operation. Violators will be prosecuted under the local ordinance for illegal dumping and may be fined up to $600!

YORK CITY DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS 849-2245 - MAIN OFFICE 843-1240 - LARGE ITEM COLLECTION SERVICE CITY REMINDS RESIDENTS TO USE LARGE ITEM COLLECTION SERVICE.  In an effort to keep City properties and streets clean, the City of York reminds residents to use the large item collection service. Household items that do not fit the weight and size limits for regular trash are “large items.” Violations of Article 951 of the City's codified ordinances could result in fines up to $600 per occurrence.
  Here’s how the large item collection service works:
Large items must be scheduled about a week in advance. York City refuse customers only may schedule up to five (5) household furniture/appliance items each week, as needed. There are some items that will not be collected through the City’s curbside program and that must be handled privately. Please see attached list for items included and excluded from this program. To schedule a large-item pick up please call 843-1240 Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A complete list of items that may be scheduled for large item collection is available for viewing. Remember, large items must be scheduled in advance.
