Why lead with the Youth Council Committee?

We believe that young people are the heartbeat of our city’s future. Currently, nearly 21.5% of York’s population is under the age of 18, and it is vital that this generation is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become our next local leaders. By joining the Youth Council, you will:
- Communicate your concerns regarding local matters that directly affect you.
- Cultivate essential leadership skills and advocate for meaningful change.
- Participate directly in local government by serving as a liaison between the youth and city officials.
-
What you will accomplish

This program offers a hands-on experience like no other. As a member, you will be tasked with high-impact responsibilities, including:
- Community Innovation: Collaborate to design and implement a volunteer project—such as community gardens, donation drives, or environmental cleanups—to address local needs.
- Civic Representation: Serve as a youth representative at town hall meetings and school board sessions, campaigning for causes that matter to you.
- Direct Influence: Meet monthly with members of the York City Council to share ideas, discuss suggested improvements, and present your vision for the city.
- A Seat at the Table: Members are even offered time during official Council meetings to present on topics or legislation to inform the community and leadership.
-
Who can apply?

We are looking for a diverse group of students who represent ALL youth in the City of York. Our primary criterion is simple: a demonstrated desire to make a difference right here in your home.
- Eligibility: Rising 10th – 12th grade students who are city residents.
- Participating Schools: Students from William Penn, York Catholic, Crispus Attucks Youth Build Charter School, York Home School Association, Logos Academy, York Academy Regional Charter, York County Vocational Technical School, and Tidings of Peace are encouraged to apply.
- Commitment: The program runs yearly from September through June, with competitive applications typically accepted between January and March.
Your voice matters, your ideas are valued, and your contributions can help create a better York.
