Severe Storms Today, Tropical Storm Debbie This Weekend

The City of York’s Stormwater Department would like to bring incoming severe weather to the attention of residents and businesses. This evening and overnight, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms that may contain torrential downpours and high winds. We ask that everyone please look around your properties and secure anything that may blow away. Also, please take the time to check your nearest storm drain and ensure it is clean of trash, leaves, grass, and other debris. It is imperative that we keep our storm drains clean so the stormwater can drain effectively.

Furthermore, Tropical Storm Debbie is expected to move up the East Coast in the next few days, potentially bringing even more heavy rain and winds our way. Our Public Works staff are working diligently to ensure that our stormwater system is working to the best of its ability given it is a hundreds year old system, but if we all take the time and check the grates it would help out tremendously. There are over 2,400 inlets in the City of York – and counting. Public Works cannot get to each one, but with your help we can get most of them. Also of note, please remember to keep your grass clippings out of the streets and gutters. Grass accumulates on the grates and increases the flooding risk.

Reminder: Turn around. Don’t Drown! Stay out of flooded intersections and roadways.

Our hardworking Public Works staff will be called in should things get backed up or if we are needed for emergencies. Please be patient as we will get to everyone’s complaints as soon as we can. If you have an emergency, please dial 911.
