On November 6, 9 am, a Dominican Republic flag will be raised at City Hall, 101 S George St, and flown in recognition of Dominican Republic Constitution Day. All are invited to the celebration.
The Dominican Republic adopted its first Constitution on November 6, 1844. The Dominican Republic now celebrates Constitution Day every year on the Monday or Friday closest to November 6. The Dominican Republic Constitution is based on the U.S. Constitution with free elections, freedom of religion, the freedom to express personal views, and an independent judiciary.
Dominicans are the fifth-largest population of Hispanic origin living in the United States. Echo-Latino Americano 809 started this movement to raise the Dominican flag in York.
The Dominican Republic flag is the second to be raised as part of the Raise Your Flag campaign that erected a total of three flagpoles in front of City Hall. The third pole typically will fly the City of York flag; however, the Mayor may by proclamation order a different flag to be flown to honor cultures, local sports teams, and heroes.
