On Tuesday, November 11, 11:00 am, a POW/MIA flag will be raised at City Hall, 101 S George St, and flown in recognition of Veterans Day. The County of York is providing the flag. All are invited to attend.
In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, World War One came to an end. The United States subsequently adopted November 11th as Armistice Day, renaming the holiday to Veterans Day in 1954.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday to honor people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The POW/MIA flag was designed in 1971 by Mrs. Michael Hoff, an MIA wife, as a symbol of the nation’s Prisoners of War/Missing In Action. In 1998, Congress ordered the POW/MIA flag to be flown on federal buildings on Veterans Day.
The POW/MIA flag is the fourth to be raised as part of the Raise Your Flag campaign that erected a total of three flagpoles in front of City Hall. The third pole typically will fly the City of York flag; however, the Mayor may by proclamation order a different flag to be flown to honor cultures, local sports teams, and heroes.
