Tree Stump Removal on Market St Beginning September 9th. New Trees to Be Planted in October

Starting Tuesday, September 9, the City of York will begin stump removal from the tree wells in the downtown area on Market Street between Pershing Ave and Duke St. One side of Market St will be closed to traffic and parking so that a contractor can remove the stumps and prepare the tree wells for new trees. One lane will be kept open to help traffic move through the downtown area. The city is anticipating 3 weeks for this phase of the tree replacement project.

The project is part of a partnership with the Rotary Club of York to replace the declining trees that line Market St in this area currently. These trees have become increasingly unsafe — prone to breaking apart and pose a hazard to pedestrians, vehicles, and nearby buildings. The trees have reached the end of their life cycle. The average tree in an enclosed tree well is 25 years old.

The 60 new trees will be funded by the Rotary Club of York, and the Rotary Club will lead a volunteer-based effort in October to plant the new trees. The project will also include planter boxes at key corners, planted with seasonal color to further enhance the beauty of the corridor.
