CITY OF YORK ENDORSES NAMING OF CODORUS CREEK BANK IMPROVEMENTS TO BE THE GOVERNOR TOM WOLF CODORUS GREENWAY
(1 June 2023) York, PA — The Mayor and City Council Members of York have issued a Joint Proclamation supporting and endorsing the future naming of the Codorus Greenway as the Governor Tom Wolf Codorus Greenway. The York County Economic Alliance, the entity leading the project, also supports the name.
The Codorus Greenway project is meant to beautify the banks of the Codorus Creek along a 1.4-mile section in the City of York. The concept reimagines the creek as a true public space for the community, by which it improves public access on both sides of the creek, increases recreational opportunities, and enhances the ecological habitat of the creek through stormwater mitigation, urban flood control, and native plantings. The project is currently in the engineering phase. Permit application to the US Army Corps of Engineers is anticipated in early 2024 with the first phase of the Greenway’s construction thereafter.
Governor Tom Wolf, who is from and resides in York County, served as the Governor of Pennsylvania from 2015 to 2023. Naming the Codorus Greenway after him is meant to honor his years of service, especially his lasting impact on the York region. Under the Wolf Administration, $24 million was contributed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to this project, including Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funding. During his two terms, Governor Wolf worked with members of the General Assembly to approve over $170 million in RACP funding to York County, including over $113 million for projects in the City of York.
