On Monday, November 10, 10 am, a Marine Corps flag will be raised at City Hall, 101 S George St, and flown in recognition of the Marine Corps’s 250th birthday. The Marine Corp League’s First Capitol Detachment is providing the flag. All are invited to attend.
The United States Marine Corps was established by an act of the Continental Congress on November 10, 1775. The United States Marines have distinguished themselves in hostile action from the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, the sands of Iwo Jima, the reservoir at Chosin, the jungles of Vietnam, the desert of Iraq, and the mountains of Afghanistan.
The Marine Corps League was established in 1946 by current and former active duty Marines to perpetuate the Honor, Courage, Commitment and Camaraderie of the Corps. The First Capitol Detachment was founded in 1983 by current and former active duty Marines of York and York County to further those ideals. The Detachment has contributed actively and financially to the community in support of Charitable, Social Service, and Veterans organizations including activities at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon and the annual Toys for Tots campaign.
The Marine Corps’s flag is the third to be raised as part of the Raise Your Flag campaign that erected a total of three flagpoles in front of City Hall. The third pole typically will fly the City of York flag; however, the Mayor may by proclamation order a different flag to be flown to honor cultures, local sports teams, and heroes.
