York City Council invites the media and the public to a press conference to introduce the newly established Youth Council Committee. The event will take place on January 20, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in York City Council Chambers, 101 S. George St., York, PA.

Established under Article 198 of the city’s codified ordinances, the committee serves as an advisory body for high school-aged residents to provide counsel to local government. With roughly 21.5% of York’s residents under the age of 18, the committee is committed to equipping the next generation with the leadership skills they’ll need to help shape the city’s future.

The objective of this initiative is to engage and empower youth within the City of York by fostering their active participation in local governance, leadership development, and community initiatives. The Youth Council Committee will serve as a platform for young individuals to voice their ideas, influence decision-making, and collaboratively address the needs of their peers and the broader community. Through mentorship and hands-on experiences, the committee aims to cultivate future leaders who are dedicated to creating positive, lasting change in their city.

“The establishment of a Youth Council Committee represents a bold and exciting step toward empowering the leaders of tomorrow,” said Council President Edquina Washington. “By providing young people with a platform to share their ideas, we are showing them that their voices matter, their ideas are valued, and their contributions can help to create a better York community.”

City Council will offer an overview of eligibility, term limits, committee activities, and how to apply.
