The City of York Bureau of Health will recognize the third annual 988 Day on September 8, 2026. 988 Day is a national initiative led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to raise awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and highlight the importance of prioritizing mental health and seeking help. 988 Day is a key part of the broader September focus on suicide prevention, mental health awareness, and recovery.
This year’s 988 Day theme is “988 Reasons: Your Reason Is Enough,” highlighting the many reasons people may need support, including a difficult moment, a mental health challenge, or concern for someone else.
Our participation aims to remind those who are struggling that they are not alone. Anyone can call, text, or chat 988 at any time to connect with a skilled, caring, and nonjudgmental 988 counselor who will listen, help with safety planning when needed, and connect them to additional resources.
Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 Lifeline has received and routed more than 26 million contacts via phone, text, and online chat, underscoring the real impact 988 has in meeting urgent emotional needs.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health challenges, emotional distress, substance use problems, or simply needs to talk, call or text 988 or chat online at 988lifeline.org.
