Mayor Michael Helfrich will be available to answer questions about his experience at the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting that took place from June 20-23 in Kansas City, Missouri. The press is invited to a press conference at York City Hall on Thursday, June 27 at 2:00 pm. Press interested in attending should please email smiller@yorkcity.org.
The City of York received two recognitions during the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting.
First, the City of York received a Digital Equity Grant of $75,000 to work with SCPa Works on a new program. The Mayor issued the following statement: “With these funds, York City residents preparing to return to our city from incarceration will have the opportunity to enhance their digital literacy skills through group and one-on-one instruction, experience potential careers through full virtual reality immersion, and access a myriad of workforce development activities provided by PA CareerLink and partners. I must reiterate, many of these services will be provided while individuals are still in incarceration so that they are prepared prior to reentering our community.”
Second, Mayor Michael Helfrich proudly accepted a small-city Honorable Mention Recognition by the United States Conference of Mayors on behalf of York City’s Group Violence Intervention and partners. The GVI initiative involves the Mayor, the York City Police Department, the York County District Attorney’s Office, the US Attorney General Office, WellSpan Health, “credible messengers,” and more. York’s GVI initiative aims to reduce gang and gang-like violence by supporting those who want to escape a life of crime and prosecuting those who refuse. The Recognition builds on other national recognition that York’s GVI has been receiving.
The Mayor is happy to discuss other topics presented in the annual meeting.
