The City of York announces that the annual citywide leaf collection program will officially begin on November 2 and continue through the week of December 14. Residents are asked to place all leaves at the curb no later than December 14, allowing Public Works crews the remainder of the week to complete final collections. A reminder notice will be issued in advance of the final pickup week.
Leaf collection is a critical seasonal service that helps maintain clean streets and proper stormwater flow. To ensure smooth operations, residents are asked to follow the guidelines below:
- Leaves only — no grass, brush, or branches.
- Leave a 6 to 8 inch gap between the curb and leaf piles to allow stormwater to reach drains.
- Do not place leaves on top of storm drains.
- Do not park vehicles on leaf piles, as this prevents proper collection.
Collection Operations
Early in the season, leaf piles may be scattered throughout neighborhoods. As a result, collection trucks may not be visible every day. Residents are encouraged to place leaves at the curb as they rake them; crews will collect leaves as they make their rounds.
With only two crews assigned to service the entire city, a set collection schedule is not possible. Weather conditions, including rain or early snowfall, may also affect timing. Despite these factors, Public Works crews will travel through all neighborhoods several times during the collection period to ensure leaves are collected.
